Yellow Pages Use is in Decline

Since the beginning of local search online, the Yellow Pages have seen a significant decrease in its users. People do not turn to the book anymore when they’re trying to find a local business; they search online. Consumers are finding more and more of the information they’re looking for through local search queries like “Plumber Irvine.” It’s fast and efficient to search online and they can even do it from their mobile phones when they’re on-the-go. The need for a print directory like the Yellow Pages has been virtually eliminated. Need proof? Check out this graph comparing the popularity of Google Maps to that of the Yellow Pages. Ever since Google Maps was launched in late 2004, demand for the Yellow Pages has declined in direct correlation to the rise in popularity of Google Maps.

A study that tracked eye movement and click patterns in search results was recently conducted by SEOMoz.org. When a search for “pizza” was performed, the most eye activity centered on the local Maps letters (also known as the 7-pack). The top three organic listings also got a lot of attention. See the heat map below for a better understanding of the results.

When tracking a search query “best pizza in Chicago,” the results showed the “F-shaped” pattern below. The most activity landed on the top organic search results with some eyes drifting to the map on the right-hand side. The photo also shows that the Map is still looked at when it moves as the user scrolls further down the page.
